The Academy

About

Bantus Capoeira Malaysia started out in humble beginnings in a single shop lot in Damansara Jaya back in 2004 and has since expanded into a comfortable and well-equipped academy on the top floor of 2 shop-lots in the heart of Petaling Jaya. At the Academy, not only can you find Capoeira classes, but also Brazilian dance classes.

Capoeira Classes

In Capoeira classes, students learn how to increase their flexibility, agility, balance, fitness, and self-confidence. They also learn how to play the instruments of Capoeira as well as sing in Portuguese. Music is an essential element to Capoeira and is played during training sessions. During the “game” of Capoeira the music is played lived. Capoeira is made up of an array of simple to complex movements, and the student can never stop learning about this beautiful art form. Classes are taught in a safe, fun and friendly environment in English, Portuguese and a mish-mash of Manglish. Classes are conducted from Monday to Saturday. Please check the Schedule for more details.

Roda

“Roda” literally means circle and this is where students apply their training.  A Capoeira roda is formed by a circle of people and at the head of the roda is the bateria, which are the Capoeira instruments - berimbau, atabaque, pandeiro, sometimes the ago-go and recoco. The bateria is led by the gunga, the head berimbau, and it is the player of the gunga that sings a song, which everyone responds by singing the chorus. It is the music that sets the rhythm of the game.

A game begins with the instruments, then the singing and clapping. Two players start at the foot of the berimbau. As their game progresses, another player from the roda may circle round to pay their respects to the berimbau, find an opening, and buy the game. The game continues in this flow until the berimbau signals the end.

Dance Classes

Samba is considered the dance of celebration and joy. There are many types of Samba dances but the most popular style is what is seen at Carnival celebrations in Rio. Samba is a dance that never fails to entertain with its distinctive dance steps and elaborate outfits.

Ache is a modern style of dance that has risen from popular funky and up-beat music. Ache is performed individually and is a very cheeky, lively and energetic style.
